Familiar words may appear with an unfamiliar meaning (often a figurative meaning), or surrounded by other words that together form an idiom or common phrase. کلمات آشنا ممکن است با معنایی ناآشنا (اغلب معنای مجازی، استعاره ای) ظاهر شوند یا با کلمات دیگری ترکیب شوند که با هم یک اصطلاح یا عبارت مشترک را تشکیل می دهند.

اگر وسیله نقلیه بخزد، یعنی به آرامی رو به جلو میرود(در ترافیک و …)
معانی دیگر: خزیدن رو زمین، چهار دست و پا رفتن کودکان و …

یک اصطلاح: به معنای دو دل بودن، دو به شک بودن.
Examples:

همانطور که در امتداد بزرگراه به آرامی حرکت میکردم، دو دل بودم که برم پیش مارکوس. - She crawled out of bed, peered into the mirror, and gave a small groan
از رختخواب بیرون خزید (آروم بیرون اومد)، به آینه نگاه کرد و یه کم ناله کرد.

I’d been in two minds about going in the first place, but it was sweet of him to invite me, and I wasn’t tied up, so I said ‘yes’.

Example:

من دو دل بودم اولش، اما این نظر لطفش بود که منو دعوت کرد، و من چون مشغله ای نداشتم پس گفتم باشه.

به فکر خطور کردن در یک لحظه

یک کلمه غیر رسمی به معنای احمق بودن
Example:

اما الان یه لحظه به فکرم خطور کرد که شاید اون میخواد با من بره بیرون (اینجا منظورش ایجاد رابطه عاشقانه هست). چطور من انقدر احمقم؟!

Example:

مارکوس خیلی خوب بود، اما یه رابطه عاشقانه آخرین چیزی که بود به ذهنم میرسید. چطوری میتونستم از دستش خلاص بشم؟

اگر یک وسیله نقلیه بخوره به درخت، دیوار یا یه وسیله نقلیه دیگه، برخورد کردن به هم
نکته: این اصطلاح معانی دیگری هم دارد.
Example:

اما بعدش، ترافیک ناگهان شروع به روان شدن کرد و یه چیزی خورد به پشت (ماشین) من.

از این عبارت زمانی استفاده میکنیم که میخواییم یک خبر سوپرایز کننده در عین حال ناراحت کننده رو به دیگران بدیم

گوش کن، باورت نمیشه اینو یا باورت نمیشه چی شده، اما …
get sb/ sth to do sth
I couldn’t get him to leave the house.
make or persuade sb/sth to do sth
یه نفر رو مجبور یا متقاعد کنید که یه کاری رو انجام بده
Examples:
I couldn’t get him to leave the house.
من نتونستم متقاعدش کنم که خونه رو ترک کنه
I finally got the car to start.
من بالاخره ماشین رو به زور روشن کردم (به زور یعنی کلی بهش ور رفتم تا روشنش کردم)

find out sth by looking, asking, telling or waiting
سردرآوردن از چیزی با دیدن، پرسیدن، گفتن یا صبر کردن
Examples:

It may be ok. Let’s see what happens.
ممکنه حل بشه. بذار ببینم چه اتفاقی می افته

نکته:
این لغت معانی دیگری هم دارد.

ما باید انگور ها رو بخوریم- اینا تازه نمیمونن (تو فارسی محاوره ای یعنی اگه نخوریم خراب میشن)

یه چیزی رو به یه طرز خاصی بگی یا بنویسی یا در قالب کلمات یه چیزی رو بیان کنی
Example:

من فکر میکنم این موضوع رو خیلی خوب در مقالش بیان کرده.
push sb/ yourself
Some parents push their kids really hard.
make sb work harder
مجبور کردن افراد که سخت تر کار کنن (بیشتر تلاش کنن)
Example:

بعضی والدین خیلی به بچه هاشون فشار میارن.
leave sth to/with sb
We need to book a table. I’ll leave that to you.
allow sb to take care of sth
به کسی یه مسئولیتی رو سپردن
Example:
We need to book a table. I’ll leave that to you.
ما نیاز داریم که یک میز رزرو کنیم
من این کارو به شما میسپارم یا به شما محول میکنم

My watch says 10.20. What time do you make it?
think or calculate sth to be a particular time or number
فکر کردن یا تخمین زدن یا پیش بینی کردن چیزی مطابق با یه زمان یا عدد خاص
Examples:
My watch says 10.20. What time do you make it?
ساعت (مناسب) من ده و بیست دقیقه است. ساعت مورد نظر شما چنده؟
He bought ten more; I make that 25 now.
او 10 تای دیگه خرید. من فکر میکنم حالا 25 تا داره.
bring sb/sth + adverb/ preposition
It was the war that brought him to power
cause sb/sth to reach a particular condition or place
باعث بشیم کسی به یه موقعیت یا جایگاه خاصی برسه
Examples:
It was the war that brought him to power.
جنگ باعث شد که اون به این قدرت برسه.
What brings you here? I’ve got a meeting.
چی تو رو به اینجا کشوند؟
جلسه داشتم.
come with/ in sth
I’m sure the radio comes with batteries.
be sold or produced with a particular feature
چیزی با یه آیتم خاصی فروش بره یا یه چیزی با یه ویژگی خاصی تولید بشه.
Examples:
I’m sure the radio comes with batteries.
من مطمئنم که رادیو با باتری ها به فروش میرسه
The chairs come in four different colours.
صندلی ها با چهار رنگ تولید شدن یا با چهار رنگ به فروش میرن.
