Unit 2 disease vocab OCT 2022 Flashcards
Congenital
a person is born with this
infectious
caused by pathogens
metabolic
disruption of normal chemical reactions
atrophy
cells shrink (is reversable)
hypertrophy
cells inc size (ALL muscle types) inc protein NOT FLUID
hyperplasia
inc # of cells (can be seen physiologically {physical} or non- physiologically)
metaplasia
1 cell is replaced by another (is reversable) allows cells to better survive. (think metamorphosis butterfly’s. )
dysplasia
not normal increase of cell growth with varying cell sizes, shapes, and appearance. (sometimes reversable) STRONG precursor to cancer.
anaplasia
cells change to a more immature “baby” version of the cell. OFTEN associated with malignant tumors.
hereditary
a disease causes by genes passed from parents to child
nutritional deficiency
not enough nutrients in a persons diet.
degenerative
tissues and organs degenerate over time (cancer)
neoplastic
The rapid division of cells to form tumors.
immunologic
dis-functioning of the immune system (allergies, asthma etc.)
iatrogenic
a disease that is induced by a drug after a medical procedure.
psychogenic
mental stressors that will cause physical diseases.
idiopathic
a disease without a cause. “disease within itself.”
ischemic
Disease occurring when oxygen and blood is restricted from a part of the body.
systemic
affects whole body –> high blood pressure or flu
incidence
occurance of new cases/injury/disease in a population
prevalence
total number of people in a population who have a disease at a specific time EX) 57% of a population
pandemic
epidemic occurring worldwide
pathogenis
development of a disease… how it got there
prognosis
prediction of an outcome of a disease.. how likely you are to recover.
etiology
the cause or causes of a disease
complication
unexpected medical conditions that happen during treatment.
edema
swelling caused by excess fluids in body tissues
exacerbation
worsening or increase in severity of a disease or its symptoms.
remissions
temporary or permanent decrease of a disease (getting better)
sequla
pathological conditions that results from a prior disease or injury
benign
a condition, tumor, or growth that is not cancerous
karolysis
disintegration of the cells nucleus; occurs w death of a cell.
oncosis
cell death w swelling
fatty infiltration
infiltration of an organs tissues with excess amounts of fats.
relapse
return of a disease after it appeared to get better and go away
nosocomial
when a patient gets an infection while receiving healthcare; they came without it
acute
severe and sudden onset
chronic
last 1 year or more, require healthcare, or limit daily activities
