Homicide
The killing of one human by another, the most serious crime. Can be criminal or noncriminal.
Murder
The most serious form of criminal homicide. (Manslaughter is less severe)
Malice
Having the intent the kill, seriously harm, or acting in extremely reckless manner which shows a lack of regard for human life. Every murder has malice (First, Second, Felony).
First-Degree Murder
Killing that is done with premeditation, deliberation, and malice. It is before hand, decisive, and done with the intent to kill.
Second-Degree Murder
Killing that is done with malice, but without premeditation and deliberation.
Voluntary Manslaughter
Killing after provocation, done without malice (no time to “cool off”).
Involuntary Manslaughter
The unintentional killing resulting from conduct so reckless that it causes extreme danger of death.
Negligent Homicide
Cause of death through negligence (crime).
Ex. automobile homicide
Negligence
The failure to exercise a reasonable or ordinary amount of care in a situation that causes harm to someone.
Noncriminal Homicide
Homicide that is NOT classified as a crime.
Ex. Killing at war, Death penalty, Police Killings, Self-defense or Defending another
Suicide
The deliberate taking of one’s life. Considered manslaughter if someone provides aid.
Assault
Any attempt or threat to carry out a physical attack upon another person.
Battery
Unlawful physical contact inflicted by one person upon another without consent.
Stalking
When a person repeatedly follows or harasses another person and makes threats, causing fear.
How many types of Rape are there?
Two. Forcible Rape, also known as date rape, and Statutory Rape.
