Chemical Irritation and inflammation from gallstones
Calculous cholecystitis (obstructive)
Inflammation not due to gallstones but anatomic issues
Acalculous cholecystitis (flow issue)
Complications of calculous cholecystitis
Blockage → Ischemia → Infection → Perforation → Peritonitis
S/S of cholecystitis (pain? GU S/S?) (7)
- RUQ pain (may radiate to R. shoulder)
- Rebound tenderness
- Fever
- Jaundice
- Dark urine
- Clay-colored stools
- Steatorrhea
A HIDA scan is measuring

Interventions for cholecystitis (surgical procedure + Mx + Nutrition–exclude drug therapy) (3)
- Surgical procedure (Cholecystectomy, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, percutaneous biliary catheter)
- IV fluids (prevent dehydration)
- AVOID FATTY FOODS :(
Drug therapy for cholecystitis (4)
Drug therapy:
1. Pain meds (Opioids!)
2. NSAIDs (decrease inflammation)
3. Antiemetics
4. Ursodiol (Actigall)
A Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is preferred why?
Get those suckers in and out (same-day surgery)
