Unit 2 : Alcohols Flashcards
What is the functional group for alcohols
Hydroxyl group (-OH)
What is a primary alcohol
The carbon carrying the -OH functional group is directly bonded to one other atom
What is a secondary alcohol
The carbon that is carrying the -OH functional group is directly bonded to 2 other carbon atoms
What is a tertiary alcohol
The carbon atom that is carrying the -OH functional group is directly bonded to 3 other carbon atoms
What are alcohols with 2 hydroxyl groups called
Diols
What type of bonding does the -OH group give a rise to
Hydrogen Bonding
Are Melting and Boiling points high or low for Alcohols
Hydrogen bonding in alcohol leads to strong intermolecular forces, therefor high melting and boiling points as there is a lot of energy required to break those bonds.
