Unit 1 : Covalent Bonds Flashcards
What is a Covalent bond
The result of two positive nuclei being held together by their common attraction for the shared pair of electrons
What is a pure covalent bond
If the atoms forming a covalent bond have the same electronegativity the atoms pull the electrons to the same extent and will share electrons equally to form pure covalent bonds
What is a non polar covalent bond
If the electronegativity difference between the atoms in a covalent bond is less than 0.4, we consider the bond to be non-polar
What is a polar covalent Bond
If the atoms in a covalent bond have sufficient difference in electronegativity, (from 0.5 to 2.0 )the atom with the higher electronegativity will pull the electrons more to one side to form a polar covalent bond
How do we know if a molecule is polar
If the structure of the molecule is not symmetrical then it’s most likely polar
what type of intermolecular forces do polar molecules contain
London dispersion forces and permanent dipole-permanent dipole forces
How do we tell if a molecule is non polar
If the structure of the molecule is symmetrical then it is likely to be non polar
What type of bonds do non polar molecules contain
London dispersion forces only
