Unit 1 : Ionisation Flashcards
What is the definition of Ionisation
The energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of atoms in a gaseous state
What is the trend across a period
Ionisation increases across a period because it would take more energy to break effectively increasing attraction
What are the trends down a group
Ionisations decreases down a group as effective nuclear charge also decreases down a group
What is the first ionisation of magnesium
Mg(g) —> Mg+(g) + e-
What is the second ionisation of magnesium
Mg+(g) —> Mg2+(g) + e-
Is the first or second ionisation energy higher
Second ionisation energy for any atom will always be higher than the first
Why is the second ionisation higher than the first
Because is already has a positive ion
