PAST SIMPLE
The past simple verbs is the same for all persons
Remember that we don’t use the past simple form of the main verb in negative sentences or questions.
SPELLING RULES FOR REGULAR PAST SIMPLE VERBS
After most verbs add -ed Eg: walk walked After verbs ending in -e Add -d Eg: decide decided After verbs ending in a consonant + -y Change the -y to -i and add -ed Eg: study studied After verbs ending in a vowel +-y Add -ed as usual Eg: play played After verbs ending in a single consonant after a single vowel Double the final consonant and add -ed eg: stop stopped After verbs ending in -l after a single vowel Always doble the -l, even if the vowel is not stressed Eg: travel travelled.
SPELLING RULES FOR IRREGUAL VERBS
There are no specific rules for the way form the past simple affirmative of irregular verbs.
When we use the past simple ?
We use the past simple to talk about actions that began and ended in the past.

QUESTIONS
For wh- questions, we use:
Question word+did+subjet+verb
Eg: What did we go? Who did he call?
For questions with Be, we use:
question word+be
Eg: How old was he? Where were you lasta night?
When we use the past continuous ?
We use the past continuous to talk about something that was in progress in the past.
Eg: He was cycling at ten o’clock last night(= the action was in progress at ten o´clock).
How we form questions in the past continuous ?
We form questions in the past continuous with:
question word+was/were+subjrt+ing form
Eg: What was he doing ?
Why were they running ?
PAST CONTINUOUS
Versus
PAST SIMPLE
We use the past simple to talk about an action or situation in the past that finished and is over
Eg: He walked home last night(= a finished action),
He was waking home at 5pm yesterday(= an action that was in progress at a particular time in the past)
We use the past continuous to talk about an action that was in progress when another action hapenned
Eg: He was swimming across the river when a crocodile attacked him
Note that we usually use -while- before a past continuous verb, and -when- before a past simple verb.
Eg: While he was cycling across the desert, he had an accident,
He was cycling across the desert when he had an accident
