What is a organizational structure?
the internal framework of business that shows the way management is organized and how authority is passed through.
What is the span of control?
the number of subordinates reporting directly to a manager.
What is the idea of delegation?
the passing on of control and authority to lower levels.
In what way is delegation done?
delegate to employees so that they can be successful, things you know they can do well.
What are the types of organizational structures?
wide span of control / flat hierarchy (centralized)
narrow span of control / tall hierarchy (decentralized)
Advantages of wide span of control / flat hierarchy
- little alienation from top level
- less management positions = less costs
- communication is faster and more accurate
Disadvantages of wide span of control / flat hierarchy
- little room for promotion
- immense pressure on management
- lack of creativity with talents untapped
Advantages of narrow span of control / tall hierarchy
- greater specialization
- opportunities for promotion
- team work concept
Disadvantages of narrow span of control / tall hierarchy
- pretty expensive
- out of touch with corporate identity at lower levels which causes less motivation
- loss of control and inefficiency may duplicate work
What is delayering?
the restructuring of the organization. the removal of one or more of the levels of hierarchy from an organizational structure
What are ways of delayering?
- fire employee
- layoff (reduce hours)
- transferred (dept., city, state, country)
Advantages of delayering
- reduce costs (economies of scale)
- improve speed of communication
- employees take on wider span of opportunities
Disadvantages of delayering
- anxiety about who is next to be delayered
- loss of loyalty, motivation, and productivity
Advantages of project-based structure
- flexible
- productive
- motivation (asked by senior to do and know cant let down)
Disadvantages of project-based structure
- disconnection (go back and not used to)
- conflicting among team
- added pressure to complete project
- work remains
