Self-awareness
The ability to recognize oneself as separate from the environment and other individuals
Consciousness
A state of awareness
Waking
A normal state of consciousness characterized by alertness and awareness of external stimuli
Carcadian Rhythm
A daily biological rhythm
Examples: sleep, wake, body temperature, hunger
Default Mode Network (DMN)
A network of interconnecting brain regions who’s activity corresponds to mind-wandering, thinking about the self, and preparing for conscious thought
Major Depressive Disorder with Seasonal Pattern
Depression occurs regularly at the same time each year, usually during winter months
Formerly known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Melatonin
A hormone released in the evening that regulates sleep cycles

- Gamma (attending to sensory input)

- Alpha (relaxed waking)
- Theta (lighter stages of N-REM sleep)
- Delta (deep, N-REM sleep)
Delta Wave
Indicates deep N-REM sleep

Indicates alert waking

Indicates relaxed waking

Indicates attention to sensory input

Indicates the lighter stages of N-REM sleep
Sleep Apnea
Sleep disorder in which the person stops breathing while asleep
Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Sleep disorder in which an otherwise healthy infant dies during sleep
