Narcolepsy
Sleep disorder characterized by a rapid onset of REM sleep which can occur at any time
Episodes are typically triggered by a strong emotional response
Insomnia
Sleep disorder characterized by an inability to either initiate or maintain normal sleep
Sleep Terror
Sleep disorder occurring in Non-REM sleep, in which the sleeper wakes suddenly in great distress but without experiencing the imagery of a nightmare
Lucid Dreaming
Conscious awareness of dreaming accompanied by the ability to control the content of the dream
Dreaming
A mental state that usually occurs during sleep that features visual imagery
EEG Waves during Waking
An EEG records oscillations between Alpha and Beta waves
Rapid Eye Movement sleep (REM)
vs.
Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep (N-REM)
REM: Waveforms resembling waking on EEG, accompanied by rapid motion of the eyes, muscular paralysis, and SNS activation
N-REM: Theta & Delta waves on EEG, and deep physical relaxation
Near-death Experience
Altered state of consciousness reported by people who were close to death because of cardiac or other medical problems that feature out-of-body experiences, “light at the end of the tunnel” perceptions, and a state of calmness
Seizure
Abnormal Level of brain activation with a sudden onset
Psychoactive Drug
Any drug with the capability to alter a person’s state of consciousness
Tolerance
The need that requires greater quantities of a drug to achieve the same effect
Withdrawal
Physical responses to the removal of a habitually administered drug(s)
Addiction
A compulsive physical dependence on a substance or activity that continues despite negative consequences
Hallucinogen
A drug that stimulates the experience of false perceptions
Stimulant
Any drug that increases the activity of the nervous system
