Unit 2 Flashcards
The pth percentile of a distribution is the value with p% observations less than or equal to it
Percentile
Plots a point corresponding to the percentile of a given value in a distribution of quantitative data. Consecutive points are then connected with a line segment to form the graph
Cumulative Relative Frequency Graph
Tells us how many standard deviations from the mean a value falls, and in what direction
Standardized Score (z-score)
Models the distribution of a quantitative variable with a curve that is always on or above the horizontal axis and has area exactly 1 underneath it
Density Curve
The point at which the density curve would balance if made of solid material
Mean of the Density Curve
The equal-areas point, the point that divides the area under the density curve in half
Median of the Density Curve
A symmetric, single-peaked, bell-shaped density curve
Normal Curve
The distribution described by a normal curve
Normal Distribution
In a normal curve, the rule that 68% of the data falls within one standard deviation, 95% falls within two, and 99.7% falls within 3
Empirical Rule
The normal distribution with mean 0 and standard deviation 1
Standard Normal Distribution
A scatterplot of the ordered pair for each of the individuals in a quantitative data set.
