one lifestyle choice that contributes to ill-health is smoking the UK health service invests heavily into smoking prevention and treatment therefore if someone smokes is based off their own accord 2% of the NHS budget or 2.5billion annualy.

however, some people may argue that smoking is not purely a choice rather a result of an individuals environment - smoking rates are highest in deprived areas 40% in the 5 most depraved areas in Glasgow compared to 11% in the 5 most affluent.

Another lifestyle choice that contributes to ill-health is the excessive consumption of alcohol - Scots are known for binge drinking - 4 Scots die a week from alcohol-specific deaths - 1245 deaths a year alcohol-specific deaths.

However, some people may argue that the excessive consumption of alcohol is not a choice but a result of the environment - alcohol-related deaths are 5.6 times higher in the most deprived areas compared to the more affluent.

A final lifestyle choice that contributes to ill-health is drugs Scotland has the highest drug death rate in the entirety of the EU - with 1339 deaths due to drugs in 2021.

some people may argue that the use of drugs in not purely a choice as 54% of all drug related hospital admissions come from 20% of the most deprived areas.
