UNIT 1.2 - MUSCULAR SYSTEM Flashcards
Contractibility
the ability of the muscle to shorten
Extensibility
the ability of the muscle to lengthen
Elasticity
ability of the muscle to return to normal size
Atrophy
the wasting away of muscle tissue
Hypertrophy
Increase in size of muscle tissue
Controlled by nerve stimuli
Requires an impulse or recognition to initiate movement
Fed by capilliaries
Blood will be redistributed to muscles when they are working and require more oxygen
Characteristics of a smooth muscle
has spindle-shapes, nonstriated uninucleated fibers
occurs in the walls of internal organs
is voluntary
Characteristics of cardiac muscle
striated, branched, uninucleated fibers
occurs in walls of heart
is involuntary
Skeletal muscle
has striated, tubular multinucleated fibers
usually attached to skeleton
is voluntary
Epimyseum
outer layer which covers the entire muscle
perimyseum
bundles of muscle fibres or fascicles (long, cylindrical)
endomyseum
layer of fascia that surrounds the individual fibres
myofibril
elongated contractile threads found in striated muscle
actin
a protein which forms the contractile filaments of muscle cells
