What are the abnormal lung sounds to look out for?
Crackles

What do crackles sound like?
popping and crackling, usually from pneumonia patients; fluid in the lungs
What does wheezing sound like?
whistling or musical noise on EXHALATION (think asthma, you’ve had this bitch)
What does rhonchi sound like?
rattling by an OBSTRUCTION in the airway (also found in patients with asthma or COPD
What does stridor sound like?
High pitched wheezing.
it is a medical emergency
can be caused by epiglottitis, croup, or viral infection
Ways to reduce risk?
dietary
exercise
smoking
stress reduction
environmental factors
What is hypoxia?
lack of oxygen to cells
What is hypoxemia?
lack of oxygen to blood
What is oxygen toxicity?
high partial pressures the cause oxidative damage to the cellular membranes, causing alveoli to collapse
What does serous mean?
watery
clear
straw colored
What does sanguineous mean?
large numbers of rbc, looks like fresh bleeding
What does serosanguineous mean?
mixture of serum and RBC, light pink to blood tinged
What does purulent mean?
WBC’s, liquefied dead tissue debris, bacteria
thick, foul odor, varies in color from dark yellow to green
Sxs of suspected deep tissue injury?
nonblanchable tissue
skin is red, maroon, or purple
