b) 5 action areas, 3 strategies
describe the 5 action areas of the Ottawa charter. Give examples of each.
- building public health policy: promoting good health beyond the individual level to include communities; health policies put in place by governments and health organizations to make the healthy choice the easiest choice. Ex: seatbelt rules, restrictions of smoking
- creating supportive environments: there is a relationship between the built environment and health. People need to have access to environments that are safe and that promote good health and wellbeing. Ex: outdoor recreation services, parks, restrictions on junk food commercials
- strengthening community action: getting the community involved as a collective. Ex: community fun runs, soup kitchens, AIDS fundraisers
- reorienting health services: healthcare is individualized traditionally and focuses on treatment, but this action aims to use a holistic approach to reduce risk factors by improving SDH. Ex: training doctors to educate about dangers of smoking
- developing personal skills: personal development to make healthy choices based on having the motivation to self educate. Ex: personal diet plan, online health classes
describe the 3 strategies of the Ottawa charter
- Advocate: getting the attention of others, such as governments, friends, families, community around what you are trying to promote
- mediate: taking the contrasting ideas or opinions of those who are involved in the decision and coming to a collective agreement to protect and promote health
- enable: activities to protect and promote health
