Unit 1- water and intro to chem Flashcards
Acid
Compound that donates hydrogens to solutions. pH level is lower than 7
Adhesion and how it affects life
Clinging of one substance to another- adhesion to the cell walls of a plant help counter the effects of gravity
Base
Compound that accepts H ions and removes them from the solution. pH is higher than 7
Non-polar covalent bonds
Molecules with an equal charge throughout. Symmetrical.
Cohesion and their effects of life
The tendency of molecules to stick together- trees depend on cohesion to help transport water and nutrients up the tree’s roots.
What is the pH scale
Measures acidity and basicity
Covalent Bond
Two atoms “hooking up”. They share an electron to become stable.
Polar covalent bond
Two+ atoms with opposite charges creating a covalent bond is a polar covalent bond. They are not symmetrical
Polar Molecule
Not symmetrical. Has disproportionate charges throughout
hydrogen bond
Weak and mostly temporary links between a molecule with hydrogen and another atom and/or molecule with an opposite charge. Can create bonds when the other substance is polar.
Solution
Homogeneous mixture with 1+ solvent distributed through a solute easily. An example would be salt (solute) in water(solvent).
Ionic Bond
One or more atoms give up/take an electron to become stable.
