Unit 1 Vocab Flashcards
Differentiation
When forming planets are liquid hot materials sort by density with metals going inward and gasses bubbling out
Hydrosphere
Liquid water portion of earth from the deepest aquifer to the highest cloud
Troposphere
Lowest level of the atmosphere which contains 99 percent of life
Biosphere
Section of earth that contains all life
Lithosphere
Solid rock portion of earth’s crust and uppermost mantle
Big bang
leading theory on the formation of the universe
Absorption
The process by which a material takes in energy or material
Density
Relationship between mass and volume, how compact molecules are in a substance
Radiation
Sometimes referred to as the electromagnetic spectrum, any energy that moves across space in the form of waves
REradiation
The process by which a material absorbs energy then gives off the same or a variable wavelength of energy
Crust
Thin outermost layer of solid earth
Asthenosphere
Partially molten layer of the mantle defined by convection currents
Inner core
Solid iron and nickel and deepest layer of earth
Outer core
Liquid iron and nickel layer between the mantle and inner core
Evolve
The process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of earth
Outgassing
The process where gas bubbles out of volcanoes to earths surface
Silicate
Rocks that contain minerals with both the elements of silicon and oxygen
Gravity
The force that attracts a body towards the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass
Nebula
Cloud of space dust (Mostly hydrogen) that forms celestial body’s
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water
Terrestrial
Planets that share characteristics of being small, close to the sun, and with a solid surface
Jovian
Planets that share characteristics of being high mass, far from the sun and with a thick gaseous atmosphere
Celestial
Having to do with outer space or the sky
Accretion
The process of growth of increase, typically by the gradual accumulation of additional layers or matter
