Q
What determines a ‘group’ in the periodic table?
A
The number of electrons in the outer shell.
1
Q
How is the periodic table arranged?
A
So that elements with similar properties form columns. Vertical columns are called groups.
2
Q
How do group 1 metals react?
A
They are all metals that react with water to form an alkaline solution and hydrogen gas.
They react with oxygen to form an oxide.
3
Q
What are group 0 elements like?
A
The noble gases. They have full outer shells (all have 8 apart from helium which has 2), so they are stable thus unreactive.
4
Q
How many electrons does each shell hold?
A
2,8,8
