Unit 1- Atoms Flashcards
What are the relative charges of each sub-particle in an atom? (3)
Proton- positive (+1)
Neutron- neutral (0)
Electron- negative (-1)
Where is the nucleus in an atom and what charge does it have?
In the middle of the atom and positive because of the protons.
How do you find out the number of each sub-particle in an atom (from a periodic table)?
Protons- the bottom number (proton/atomic number)
Electrons- equal to the number of protons
Neutrons- the top number (mass number) minus the atomic/proton number
If an electron is added/removed what does the atom become?
Charged therefore it becomes an ion.
How many elements are there?
Around 100.
How are elements determined as different?
Different numbers of protons.
