What was the Enlightenment? Where did it take place?
An intellectual movement. It began in Europe and spread to America.
Who were the leaders of the Enlightenment?
Philosophers / Writers (Locke, Rousseau, and Franklin).
What did the leaders of the Enlightenment period emphasize?
Emphasized reason and logic in addressing social problems, less reliant on the authority of monarchs.
What did the Enlightenment lead to?
Led to the development of new political theories based on different systems of government. Also led to the rejection of divine right of kings.
What was the Great Awakening? Where did it take place?
Religious movement. Took place uniquely in America.
Who were the leaders of the Great Awakening?
Leaders were preachers (George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards.)
What did the leaders of the Great Awakening believe?
Emphasized emotion and spirituality in religious life, less reliant on religious leaders.
What did the Great Awakening lead to?
Led to development of new churches and greater religious choice. Also led to the rejection of strict puritan religion.
When did both movements take place?
Spread in colonies in 1700s.
What were the goals of both movements? (Three things)
- Challenging authority
- Emphasized individuality over a group.
- Promoted tolerance for new ideas.
