What did the climate look like in the New England colonies?
Cold winters, rocky terrain, barren soil, and wilderness. (Also nice harbors)
What was the economy like in the New England colonies?
Small farms, shipping/ship building, fishing, and small businesses.
Who was the source of labor in the New England colonies?
Labor came from free peoples, indentured servants, and families.
What did the population look like in the New England colonies?
English born migrants and Puritans.
Which states were breaking away from puritanism in the New England colonies?
Rhode Island and Connecticut
What kind of government did the New England Colonies have? Were they tolerant or intolerant?
A direct democracy with town hall meetings and strict puritan law in mass. New England were intolerant and had conflicts with others.
What did the geography look like in the middle colonies?
Natural harbors, resources, rolling hills, mild climate, and fertile soil.
What did the economy look like in the middle colonies?
Money came from shipping, small farms, businesses, lumber, and trapping.
Where did the labor come from in the middle colonies?
Labor came from families, free peoples, and indentured servants.
What did the population look like in the middle colonies? (Ethnicities, religions, working classes, etc.)
This area was the most diverse out of the three colonies.Had a class of merchants and shopkeepers. There were quakers in PA, protestants and Jews in NY, and presbyterians in NJ. They also had ethnicities and languages spoken such as German, French, Dutch, and English.
What did the government look like in the middle colony? Were they tolerant or intolerant?
Government consisted of a representative democracy (men could vote) and tolerance and equality.
What did the geography look like in the southern colony?
Swamy, hot, humid, fertile soil, and flat terrain.
What did the economy look like in the southern colony?
Closer to the shores, there were plantations that produced cash crops. Inland there were small farms and hunting.
Where did the labor come from in the southern colony?
Free white farmers and enslaved Africans.
What did the population look like in the southern colony?
Land-owning aristocrats, enslaved peoples, and poor whites (Scots and Irish located inland.) The population also consisted of people with the strongest loyalty to the Church of England.
