Unit 1 Terms Flashcards
Nature
Innate characteristics and behaviors of a person
Nurture
Environmental factors that influence the behaviors and development of a person
Independent Variable
Variable the experimenter manipulates/changes
Dependent Variable
Variable that may change in response to manipulating the independent variable
Experimental method
The researcher manipulates one or more variables to see how it influences another variable
Correlational method
Examines whether and how two variables change together
Action Potential
Positive electrical charge that travels down the axon
Resting Potential
Stable, negative charge of an inactive neuron
- Between -60 and -75 millivolts (mV)
All-or-none principle
When an electrical impulse reaches its threshold, it fires and travels all the way down the axon
- Action potential will either happen completely or not at al
Afferent
Nerves that carry info to the brain and spinal cord
Efferent
Nerves that carry info out of brain and spinal cord to other areas of the body
Nervous System
The body’s electrochemical communication circuitry
CNS
The brain and spinal cord
PNS
Nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body
