Unit 1 Subtopic 2 - cell membrane Flashcards
why is it called the fluid mosaic model??
this is because, the cell membrane is surrounded/ is in cytoplasm (a fluid) and it’s a mosaic as it contains little particles throughout.,
What is the structure for the cell membrane?
It is a phospholipid bilayer. This is as it is a double layer containing phospholipids.
What are extrinsic and intrinsic protein??
Extrinsic Protein – cell signaling/ communication
Intrinsic protein – Involve in transport the whole way through, specific to specific things.
What are Glycoproteins and Glycolipids function?
Signaling / communications
what does cholesterol do for the bilayer?
Maintains the structure of the bilayer.
Explain the difference between endocytosis and exocytosis.
Endocytosis is the facilitated entrance of large proteins and exocytosis is the exit of large proteins out of the cell.
what is a semi-permeable membrane?
Allows certain molecules to pass through the membrane.
what are the types of passive transport?
Simple diffusion, Facilitated diffusion + Osmosis.
what are the types of activate transport?
Endocytosis, Exocytosis
