THE DECK Flashcards
Explain how the structure relates to the function for each of the following:
Intermembrane space
Inner membrane
Matrix
Outer membrane
Cristae
Intermembrane space: small spaces to quickly accumulate protons
Inner membrane: contains ATP synthase for oxidiative phosphorylation
Matrix: has appropriate enzymes for the Kerb Cycle
Cistrae: highly folded, increase SA:Vol ratio
Define Osmosis and why does it occur?
Osmosis is a process of spontaneous diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane. It is order to balance the concentration on both sides of the membrane.
Write the balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O —-> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Define Diffusion.
The movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration.
Define Facilitated Diffusion.
Facilitated Diffusion is the transport of substances across a membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Since substances move along a concentrated gradient, chemical energy is not directly needed therefore it is passive transport.
Write the balanced chemical equation for cellular respiration?
6CH12O6 + 6O2 —-> 6CO2 + 6H2O
