Social Development: Stage 1-Trust vs. Mistrust
Birth-1YR.
Children learn ability to trust others based on caregiver consistency.
Lack of trust creates sense of fear about the inconsistent world.
Social Development: Stage 2-Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt
1-3YR
Children assert their independence by walking away from mom.
If child is criticized or overly controlled, child will feel inadequate.
Social Development: Stage 3-Initiative vs. Guilt
3-6YRS
Children plan activities, make-up games, initiate activities w/others.
If this tendency is squelched, children can develop a sense of guilt and lack self-initiative.
Social Development: Stage 4-Industry vs. Inferiority
6YRS-Puberty
Children develop a sense of pride in accomplishments.
If this is not encouraged, children feel inferior, doubt their abilities, and fail to reach potential.
Social Development: Stage 5-Identity vs. Role Confusion
Adolescence
Children look at the future.
If this is hindered, children feel confused about themselves and their role in the world.
Social Development: Stage 6-Intimacy vs. Isolation
Young Adulthood
Explore relationships, sense of commitment, safety, and caring.
Avoiding this can lead to fear of commitment, isolation and loneliness.
Social Development: Stage 7-Generativity vs. Stagnation
Middle adulthood
Individuals establish careers and begin families.
Failing to achieve this, individual’s become stagnant and feel unproductive.
Social Development: Stage 8-Ego Integrity vs. Despair
Senior Citizens
Contemplate accomplishments.
If they see their life as unproductive, they fall into despair and hopelessness.
