Basic Human Needs
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs implies clients are motivated to meet certain needs.
Deficiency Needs (D-Needs)
Physiological, Safety, Social, and Esteem.
Growth needs (being needs) (B-Needs)
Self-Actualization
Physiological needs:
Needs maintain the physical organism. Food, water, oxygen, constant body temperature.
Safety needs:
Need to feel secure, safe from harm, danger, or threat of destruction.
Social needs:
Friendship, intimacy, affection, and love.
Esteem needs:
Self respect and respect from others.
Self-actualization:
Need to be oneself, act consistently with whom one is.
Attachment theory (Bowlby):
Lasting psychological connectedness between human beings. Evolutionary context in which a caregiver provides safety for a child. Primary attachment (monotropy). Disruption in the first 5YRS can cause consequences.
Attachment
Set of learned behaviors. A child will form an attachment to whoever feeds it.

Biological
Genetics responsible for personality. Link between genetics and personality traits.

Interaction between individual and environment. Reject theories that take into account internal thoughts and feelings.

Psychodynamic
Influence of the unconscious mind and childhood experience.
Personality Theories:
Humanist
Importance of free will and individual experience. Concept of self-actualization: innate need for personal growth that motivates behavior.

Number of broad traits (characteristics that cause an individual to behave in certain ways).
