Unit #1 Review Cards 3 Flashcards
What is a lipid, and what functions do lipids perform?
Lipids are the only ones HYDROPHOBIC!!! All lipids hydrophobic!!!
Functions:
Energy storage (more CH bonds = more energy)
Fats have more C-H bonds than carbs
Phospholipids form membranes
Prostaglandins are used for signaling
Isoprenoids (terpenes) are used for vision (absorbing light)
What are glycerolipids?
Fats is a polymer of fatty acid and glycerol
Molecule of glycerol bonded to one or two fatty acids
Fatty acids are made up of long chains of C and H
Kink where double or triple bond is
Bonds and State @ room temp:
unsaturated fats
saturated fats
unsaturated fats
- liquid
- oils
- double/triple cov. bond
saturated fats
- solid
- butter, crisco, margerine
- single cov. bond
Why do fats store more energy than carbohydrates?
Fats have more C-H bonds
