Unit 1- Quiz 2 Flashcards
What are joints
Where 2 or more bones connect
They make it possible to move
How are joints classified
They are classified according to: Structure (what they are made of), functions (movement they permit)
Fibrous Joint
Immovable (ex. Structures of the skull)
Cartilaginous Joints
Slightly moveable ( Ex. Lower Vertebrae)
Functions of the bones
- Support and protection: Gives shape to the structure (feet bones, legs, pelvis and spine all support the body)
- Lever Action: Limbs are over, bones function together as levers
- Blood Cell Formation: Forms red cells, white cells and platelets
- Storage of inorganic salt: Ex. calcium, other salts are needed for metabolic processes
Long bones
Mostly located in the appendicular skeleton and includes bones in the lower limbs (tibia, fibula)
-Has a shaft and 2 ends
-Ex Humerus
Short Bones
Roughly cube-shaped and spongy with vertical and horizontal dimensions approximately equal
-Ex Carpals
Flat bones
Protect internal organs , ex. Bones in the skull
Appendicular upper
126 bones
Upper extremities:
- Scapula (2)
-Clavicle (2)
-Humerus (2)
-Ulna (2)
-Radius (2)
- Carpals (16)
-Metacarpals (10)
- Phalanges (28)
Appendicular (lower)
62 Bones
Lower Extremities
-Innominate/ oscoxate (2)
-Femur (2)
-Tibia (2)
-Fibula (2)
-Talus’ (14)
-metatarsals (10)
-Phalanges (28)
-Patella (2)
Axial
80 Bones
-Skull (28): Cranium (8), face (14), inside ear (6)
-vertebral column (26)
-Cervical (7)
-Therasic (17)
-Lumbar (5)
-Sagittal (1)
-coccyx (1)
-Hyoid bone (1) - Only bone that doesn’t articulate
-Sternum + ribs (25)
Synovial Joints
Freely Moveable (Ex. Shoulder, hip , knee)
Irregular
Vary in shape and structure so they cant fit into any other category
Ex. coccyx
Sesamoid bones
a small bone commonly found embedded within a muscle or tendon near joint surfaces
Ex Patella
Wormian
AKA Intrasutral bones
Small bones or bone island found between cranial sutures of the bones of the skull vault.
