Unit 1 - Number Flashcards
What is the lowest common multiple?
The lowest number that divides with no remainder into north numbers.
What is the highest common factor?
The highest factor between two numbers.
How do you find if a number is a product of its prime factors?
Draw a factor tree.
Then multiply all the numbers at the bottom to make that number.
What happens when something is to the power 0?
It is always 1
What is anything to the power 1?
Itself
What is 1 to Theo owner anything?
Still 1
What do you do when you multiply powers?
Add them
What do you do when you divide powers?
Subtract them
What happens when something is to the power of a half?
It is a square root.
What happens when something is to the power of a fraction?
It is to the power of the numerator.
The bottom is the square root
What happens when one power is out of the bracket and the other isn’t?
Multiple them.
What happens when the whole number is a fraction?
Apply the power to the numerator and the denominator
What happens when there is a negative power?
Then you turn it into a fraction.
The reciprocal.
To the power -2 =
1/N2
What is the reciprocal?
The numbers fractional inverse.
What is standard form?
A way of displaying very small and very large numbers.
What is a rule for standard form?
The number is always greater than one bad smaller than 10.
What happens to the power in standard form for a small number?
It is negative.
The decimal moves to the left.
What happens in standard form when the number is very large?
The power is positive.
It moves towards the right.
What is a surd?
A number that doesn’t create a whole number when it is square rooted.
What happens when surds are multiplied together?
The numbers multiply, and the product is in one surd.
What happens when two surds are divided?
It becomes a fraction in a surd.
What happens when two surds are added together?
DO NOTHING
What happens when there is a surd on the bottom of a fraction?
It needs to be rationalised.
How to rationalise a denominator?
- Multiply fraction by the bottom.
- Top becomes surd.
- Bottom gets rid of surd
How to you simplify a surd?
- Find two factors that go into that number.
- Separate into two surds.
- Square root one of the number.
- Leave other in surd.
What does estimating mean?
Looks at numbers and making hem into wile numbers before doing the calculation.
What are the three rules for estimating?
- If decimal place, round to whole number.
- If in hundreds, to the bearish hundred.
- Below 5 rounds down, 5 and above goes up.
