What is the importance of Oceans?
Provide drinking water, provides oxygen, stores carbon.
What is the use of Oceans?
Provide natural resources, breakdown waste and pollution, reduce damage from storms.
What are the problems facing Oceans?
Overfishing, illegal fishing, oceans warming - climate change.
What % of the world did the UK rule over at its’ peak?
25%.
Why were oceans important during this time?
Established trade routes of commodities around the world, control of strategic trade routes and ports to maintain dominance of regions.
What were the main trading countries during the British empire?
USA, Mexico, Jamaica, India, Philippines, Japan, Brazil, Peru.
What were the main goods transported during the British empire?
Slaves, coffee, sugar, textiles, shoes, clothes.
Which major port cities grew in the UK during this time?
Glasgow, Liverpool, Bristol, London, Southampton.
How does Britain still have a link with Commonwealth countries?
They speak English, the King is the head of state, Commonwealth games.
What is Global governance?
Relates to laws, codes and regulations that apply at an international level.
Why do Oceans need to be governed?
Countries could take over oceans, could reduce biodiversity, pollution needs to be regulated.
Which institutions have been created for global governance of oceans?
United Nations, European Union, G7, G20, G77, NATO.
What is the United Nations?
193 member states who maintain worldwide peace and security, acting to develop relations among nations.
What is the European Union?
Promote greater social, political, and economic harmony.
What is the G7?
The largest, most advanced economies meeting to discuss economics, security and energy.
What is the G20?
Discuss ways to strengthen the global economy, improving regulation.
What is the G77?
77 Developing countries, promoting their economic interests.
What is NATO?
Formal alliance between North America and Europe. Guarantees freedom and security of members.
What is a law?
Legally binding contract which countries must abide to. May be penalties imposed if they’re not abided to.
What is an agreement?
Negotiated arrangement between parties on a course of action - may not be legally binding.
What is UNCLOS?
United Nations Convention on the Law Of the Sea. Tries to solve global pressure around potential conflict of oceans, resources, covering 7 key areas.
What 7 key areas do UNCLOS cover?
Navigational rights, territorial sea limits, economic jurisdiction, legal status of resources on the seabed, passage of ships through narrow straits, conservation and management of living marine resources, binding procedure for settlement of disputes between states.
What else does UNCLOS have the power to do?
Set the limits of areas of proximity of coastal states.
What are the limits of global common?
Landward of baseline.
