Ocean
A continuous body of salt water contained in a large basin on earth’s surface.
Sea
A body of salt water surrounding land masses.
Bay
A small body of water set off from the main body.
Gulf
A part of an ocean or sea extending into the land.
Governance
The process of overseeing control and direction of an organisation.
Government
The political direction and control exercised over the actions of members, citizens, or inhabitants of communities, societies, and states.
UN
United Nations. An international organisation founded after the second world war to commit to maintain international peace.
UNESCO
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Aims to promote world peace and security.
G7
A group of the seven largest western economies.
G20
A group of 20 of the largest economies, promoting economic co-operation.
G77
77 Developing countries, designed to harmonise views on global economic issues.
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Members agree to defend each other.
UNCLOS
United Nations on the law of the sea. Sets out the legal framework for the seas.
EEZ
Exclusive economic zone, extending 200 nautical miles beyond a nation’s territorial sea.
CITES
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora.
