Q

Why was this such a important event for Catholicism in Australia

A

Significance of the Second Vatican Council is due to the impact the documents had on the way in which the Church interacted with the Modern World. The Catholic Church in Australia renewed its relationship with other Christian denominations practiced across the nation.

The past fortress and defensive attitude of the Church was changed allowing more relevancy and interactiveness in the Church as a result of these documents being enacted.

The impact of these documents is still evident today. The event effectively renewed elements of the Sacred Liturgy, which allowed Catholic communities in Australia to improve the role/engagement of the laity when celebrating the Sacred Liturgy.

Q

Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy

A

It ordered an extensive revision of worship so that people would have a clearer sense of their own involvement in the Mass and other rites. It is a core document that is centred on the call to holiness.

Past: The liturgy of the Western Catholic Church used outdated Latin language that was incomprehensible to the people and was exclusively an affair of the clergy led to a feeling of disconnectedness between the church and the laity.

Future: The whole people of God joined in divine worship with everyone taking an active part; common prayer, singing, and common reception of the Body of Christ. on essentials.

Q

External Relations/Decree of Ecumenism (Why the Second Vatican Council is Important in the history of Catholicism in Australia)

A

Ecumenism should be everyone’s concern and that genuine ecumenism involves a continual personal and institutional renewal. It is a decree that has at its core ecumenism

Past: The prevalent attitude toward other Christians was hostile and defensive; the object was to prove to them their deficiencies and errors.

Future: There is an effort to understand other Christians and make the Church’s position understandable to them. What separates is not glossed over, but ways are sought to overcome divisions through common prayer and through avoiding all conflict and competition.
