Emphasizes that UNCONSCIOUS forces determine our behavior. Experiences in our CHILDHOOD provide feelings, impulses, and instincts that are REPRESSED (pushed out of consciousness).
These unconscious forces come out later in life. Come about due to conflicts in our unconscious to satisfy wishes or needs (food, sex, aggression, etc.) and restrictions put on by society.

Emphasizes the role of ethnicity, gender, culture, and socioeconomic status on behavior. Study how behavior and thinking vary across situations and cultures.
