What are the 3 types of regions?
- Formal/Uniform/Homogenous
- Functional/Nodal
- Vernacular/Perceptual
Formal/Uniform/Homogenous:
Cultural values or distinctions along with political/governmental distinctions(like states & countries).
EX: climate, language, political voting tendencies, etc…
Functional/Nodal:
Form around a focal point. EX: regions that share a common grocery store, grain elevator, television broadcasting area, etc… (A city functions)
Vernacular/Perceptual
Exist in people’s perception of areas.
Ex: Middle East, South, The Midwest
5 themes of geography:
Place, location, Human Environmental Interaction, Movement, Region
Art and science of making maps.
Cartography
Flat representation of a sphere
Projection
Representation that is twisted, mistaken, or false
Distortion
Specific place where something is located
Site
The location of a place relative to another place.
Situation
Heredity, needs, physical envirnment, water, landforms, climate, vegetation
Physical geography
Political, social environment, family, school, friends, teams, religion, economic
Human geography
Any system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earths surface.
Graphic information system(GIS)
System of satellites and receiving devices used to determine the location of something on Earth.
Global Positioning System(GPS)
Another name for longitude:
Meridians
