Unit 1 - Hardware and Software Flashcards
Flashcards from topics 1.1.1-1.12
Define Contemporary
Contemporary means something that exists or happens in the present time or is modern. It can also describe things or people that existed or lived during the same time period.
For example:
A contemporary artist creates art in the modern era.
Two writers who lived in the same era, like Shakespeare and Marlowe, are considered contemporaries.
Define the term Device
Device: Anything that contains electronics and performs specific tasks, such as a smartphone, computer, or smartwatch.
Define the term Feature
A characteristic or function of a device, like portability, performance, or connectivity.
Define the term input device
Tools used to input data into a device, such as keyboards and microphones.
Define the term Hardware
The physical components of a device, including the motherboard, processor, video card, and other internal parts.
Define the term output devices
Tools used to output data from a device, such as speakers and monitors.
Define the term Portability
Devices that can be easily carried and used independently, such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
Define the term storage
○ The capacity of a device to store data. Different types of storage include:
§ Optical Media: CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.
§ USB Devices: Flash drives and external hard drives.
§ Solid-State Storage (SSD): Faster and more reliable than hard disks due to lack of moving parts.
Hard Disk Storage (HDD): Traditional storage with moving parts, often used for large data capacity.
Define the term performance
Refers to how well a device performs its intended tasks. This includes processing speed, responsiveness, and overall efficiency.
define the term user interface
The part of a device that a user interacts with, such as touch screens, keyboards, and graphical interfaces.
define the term connectivity
○ The ability of a device to connect to other devices and networks, either through wired connections (e.g., Ethernet cables) or wireless technologies (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth).
define the term expansion capability
Expansion Capability:
The ability to add extra components or accessories to enhance a device’s functionality, such as adding more RAM, external drives, or peripherals.
define the term media support
Refers to the types of media files a device can handle, such as audio, video, images, and documents.
Give a description, a benefit, and what does it stand for.
Solid-State Drives (SSDs)
* Description: SSDs use flash memory to store data, unlike traditional HDDs that rely on spinning disks and moving parts.
* Benefits:
○ Speed: SSDs are significantly faster than HDDs due to instant memory access.
○ Reliability: Without moving parts, SSDs are less prone to mechanical failure.
RAID Storage
- RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a technology that combines multiple storage devices into a single unit for improved performance and data redundancy.
- RAID 0:
○ Purpose: Enhances performance by splitting data across multiple drives. No data redundancy (no copying). - RAID 1:
Purpose: Mirrors data across multiple drives, providing redundancy and improving read speeds.
- RAID 0:
