Why did Spain explore the New World?
To build missions and claim territory (Florida, Texas, and California).
Why did France explore the New World?
To claim land and make profit off fur trading.
What was the environment of the New England colonies like?
They had rocky soil, cold climate, harbors, and shipbuilding. It was founded for religious reasons.
What was the environment of the Middle colonies like?
They had rich farmland, moderate climate, grew wheat and raised livestock.
What was the environment of the Southern colonies like?
They had fertile soil, a warm climate, and cash crops. It was founded for economic reasons.
What is Religious Toleration?
Allowing people to practice different religions without persecution or discrimination.
What was Massachusetts?
It was a New England colony founded by Puritans for religious freedom.
Who were the Quakers?
They were the first anti-slavery group who lived in Pennsylvania.
What was Maryland?
It was a southern colony founded for Catholics seeking religious freedom.
What is Mercantilism?
The system of the British controlling colonial trade.
What were reasons for the growth of representative government?
Distance from Britain caused colonists to make their own governments. Examples are the Mayflower Compact and the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut.
