Unit 1 Exp Design MCA Flashcards
Testable Question
A question able to be answered through investigation, analysis, and data collection.
Non-testable Question
Questions that cannot be answered by direct observation and experimentation.
Quantitative
relating to, measuring, or measured by the quantity of something rather than its quality.
Qualitative
relating to, measuring, or measured by the quality of something rather than its quantity.
Trials
a test of the performance, qualities, or suitability of someone or something.
Obervation
the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information
Empirical Evidence
Information obtained by observations or experiments.
Data
raw facts and figures that are collected for analysis and used to make decisions, can come in different forms.
Models in Science
an activity that produces models representing empirical objects, phenomena, and physical processes, to make a particular part or feature of the world easier to understand, define, quantify, visualize, or simulate.
Analogy
A comparison between two things that are otherwise unlike, but have some similarities in order to explain a concept or idea.
Prototype
An early sample, model, or release of a product that is built to test a concept or process.
Hypothesis
an educated guess
Variable
any element, feature, or factor that can vary or change within an experiment or study.
Procedure
a set of established ways of doing something, typically involving a series of steps or actions that need to be followed in specific order
Precision
the degree to which repeated measurements under unchanged conditions show the same results
Accuracy
how close a measured value is to the true or accepted value
Scientific Method
a process used by scientists to explore observations, answer questions, and test hypothesis.
Control
A standard comparison for checking or verifying the results of an experiment
Constant
a factor that does not change throughout the course of the experiment.
Predict
to make an educated guess about the outcome of an experiment or observation based on prior knowledge
Infer
to draw a conclusion based on evidence and reasoning rather than explicit statements.
Independent Variable
Intentionally changed or manipulated by the researcher to observe its effect on the dependent variable, the cause in a cause-and-effect relationship.
Dependent Variable
The variable that is observed and measured to see how it’s affected by the independent variable, the effect in a cause-and-effect relationship
Manipulated Variable
Another term for the independent variable in an experiment
Responding Variable
Another term for the dependent variable in an experiment
Sample Size
the number of individual subjects or observations included in a study or experiment.
Validity
the extent to which a test, experiment, or measurement accurately reflects or assesses the specific concept that is intended to measure.
Trends in Data
The general direction in which data points are moving over period of time.
Correlation
a statistical measure that describes the extent to which two variables are related to each other
Variability
refers to the degree to which data points in a set different from each other and from the mean of the set.
Mass
the amount of matter in an object.
Volume
the amount of space that an object or substance occupies
Weight
the force exerted on an object due to gravity. Unlike mass, weight can change
Percent
a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100.
Rate
Measure of how one quantity changes in relation to another quantity.
Ratio
a way to compare two quantities by showing the relative size of one quantity to another.
Line Graph
A type of chart used to display information that changed over time. dots connected by lines.
Bar graph
A type of chart that represents data with rectangular bars.
Pie Graph
a circular chart divided into slices to illustrate numerical proportions
Scatterplot
a type of graph used to display the relationship between two variables, it consists of points plotted on a Cartasian coordinate system, where each point represents an observation.
Claim
A claim is a statement that asserts something to be true.
Evidence
The information, facts, or data used to support a claim or statement.
Reason
An explanation for why something is the way it is or why a particular action was taken.
Theory
a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.
Bias
prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair.
