Unit 1 Definitions Flashcards
What is the definition of activation energy?
The energy required by colliding molecules to form an activated complex.
What is the definition of an activated complex?
The activated complex is an unstable arrangement of atoms formed at the maximum of the potential energy barrier, during a reaction.
What is the definition of catalyst?
A substance which speeds up a reaction without itself being used up. It lowers the activation energy of the reaction.
What is the definition of the first ionisation energy?
The energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms.
What is the definition of electronegativity?
The measure of the attraction that the nucleus of an atom involved in a bond has for the electrons in the bond.
