Unit 1 - characteristics of living organisms Flashcards
Movement
An action which causes the change in position or place of an organism
Respiration
The chemical reaction in cells that break down nutrient molecules and release energy. Animals : Oxygen + glucose = CO2 + water + ATP. Breathing is NOT respiration.
Sensitivity
The ability to detect and respond the changes in the environment
Growth
The action that creates a permanent increase in size and dry mass
Reproduction
The process of making more of the same organisms
Excretion
The removal of waste products of metabolism or found in excess in the body. NOT the same as egestion, which is he removal of undigested food (feces). An example of excretion in humans is breathing out carbon dioxide, and in plants oxygen.
Nutrition
Taking in materials with the purpose of providing energy, growth and development. In plants, that’s photosynthesis
Formula for actual size after magnification
Image size/magnification
Formula for magnification
Size of image/size of object
