Unit 1 90-93 (96) Flashcards
Positive (right) skew
When a distribution has a few extreme scores toward the high end relative to the low end
Negative (left) skew
A left-skewed distribution is longer on the left side of its peak than on its right
Bimodal distribution
A set of scores with two peaks or modes around which values tend to cluster, such that the frequencies at first increase and then decrease around each peak
Spurious correlation
variables are associated through their common relationship with one or more other variables but do not have a casual relationship with one another
R-values
Represent correlations between 2 numerical variables. The value of R is always between +1 and -1
P-values
In statistical significance testing, the likelihood that the observed result would have been obtained if the null hypothesis of no real effect were true. Small “P” values (conventionally, those less than .05 or .01) suggest that the chance of experimental results mistakenly being attributed to the independent variables present in the study (rather than to the random factors actually responsible is small
