Unit 1 Flashcards
Remember Unit 1 main points
What is biology?
The Study of Life
What is a biologist work?
To solve issues that have scientifically impaled our society.
What are the Seven Characteristics of Life?
Organization and Presence of one or more cells Response to Stimulus Homeostasis Metabolism Growth and Development Reproduction Change Through Time
What are the two types of cellular bodies?
Unicellar
Multicellar
What are the levels of organization? (big to small)
organ, tissues, cells, organelles, biologicle molecles
What are organelles?
Tiny structures that carry out functions necessary for the cell to stay alive.
What are biological molecules?
The chemical compounds that provide physical structure that bring about movement.
What is Homeostasis?
Mechanisms to maintain stable internal conditions.
What are the two types of reproduction?
sexual, asexual
What is sexual gene wise?
Combined genes
What is asexual gene wise?
same genes
Is evolution a change in a specific animal?
No, it is throughout a species.
How many species are on this planet?
1.5 million
What are the three domains of life?
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
Which domain contains: Protists, Plants, Fungi, or Animals?
Eukarya
What are the six animal kingdoms?
Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Archaea, Bacteria
What is Ecology?
The study of organisms interacting with each other and with the environment.
What is an Ecosystem?
Communities of living species and their physical environment.
What is the natural selection theory?
As animals reproduce, the ones with the weaker genes will die out and not have their genes passes on while the ones with the strongest genes with pass their genes on more
What is the adaption theory?
Needed traits for environment are developed through evolution.
Scientific method
An organized approach to learn how the natural world works
Observation
Is the act of perceiving a natural occurrence that causes someone to pose a question
Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for the way a particular aspect of the natural world functions
Prediction
a statement that forecasts what would happen in a test situation if the hypothesis were true
Experiment
Something to test a hypothesis and its predictions
Control Group
A group that provides a normal standard against which the biologists can compare results of the experimental group
Experimental Group
A group that is the same as the control group but has an independent variable
Independent variable
The factor the experimenter manipulates
Dependent Variable
The variable or part of the experiment that changes in response to the independent variable
Peer Review
Review by a person who knows a lot about the subject that is being written about and edits the paper anonymously
What are the six steps of the scientific method in order?
1) Observation
2) Hypothesis
3) Prediction
4) Experiment
5) Collect & Analyze Data
6) Communicate results / Peer review
What is a hypothesis?
an educated guess
Why does an experiment need to be organized?
So that it can be repeated
What is the independent variable and what axis is it on in a graph?
The independent variable is the variable the experimenter manipulates and is on the x axis
What is the dependent variable and what axis is it on in a graph?
The dependent variable is the thing that changes in response to the independent variable. It is on the y axis.
When should you use a bar graph?
things can be categorized
When should you use a line graph?
Change over time
When should you use a pie chart?
with percentages
Every graph needs two things…

What is a scientific theory?
still changing, generally accepted by scientific community highly tested.
What is a scientific law?
cannot be changed lots of theories support the laws.
