What is common good?
The well-being of people in a community or society in terms of justice, fairness, prosperity, and respect for human rights and the environment
What is a citizen?
A person who lives in a city, town, or country, and who is legally allowed to have the rights and freedoms of the place in which he or she lives
What is citizenship?
Understanding the rights of citizens in various communities and the roles
What are rights?
Privileges recognized and protected by the law
What are responsibilities?
Tasks or duties that an individual is required or expected to carry out
What is democracy?
A form of government in which laws are made by a direct vote of the citizens elected representatives
What are human rights?
Rights that protect the dignity and value of every individual, and give equal status and opportunities
What is Civics?
Civics is an exploration of the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Civics is also how decisions are made and who makes them
What is the main goal of Civics?
The main goal of Civics is how to be a better informed and active citizen

The right to unfair or unlawful detention without explanation or a court appearance

When people share false or misleading information on purpose
What is a hoax?
A form of disinformation that intends to trick people into believing a false story or event
What is a conspiracy theory?
A belief that a powerful group of people are causing major news events or hiding important information about the world
What is the difference between vertical reading and lateral reading?
Vertical reading is examining the content closely while Lateral reading is examining other sources
What are 2 examples of Vertical reading?
Checking to see if the site is professional, and checking the URL
What are two examples of Lateral reading?
Checking to see if a story or claim has been reported by other reliable sources and using other sources to learn about the reputation of a source
What are the 4 key questions for spotting fake news?
Is this a credible source? Is the persepective biased? Are other sources reporting the same story? Is the story timely?
