Unit 1 Flashcards
Study of Earth Science, Scientific Inquiry Process, Measurement, Models, Theories, and Laws, Atoms, Elements, Periodic Table, States of Matter
The non-living chemical and physical parts of the environment. Examples- water, air, sunlight.
Abiotic
Collected information, the results of an experiment or other investigation.
Data
An idea that can be tested by experiment or observation.
Hypothesis
Causes a change in another.
Manipulated Variable (Independent Variable)
Changes in response to the independent variable.
Responding Variable (Dependent Variable)
It’s a way of learning about the natural world.
Science
Efforts to understand and explain the natural world through observation and experiment.
Science Inquiry
When a fact is so important in understanding. Always holds ture.
Scientific Law
Is a representation of something that can not be observed directly.
Scientific Module
Idea based on evidence but it is not considered a fact until proven true.
Scientific Theory
Items in an experiment that are changed
Variable
Suggest possible explanation for an observation.
Inference
Sphere that includes all living things.
Biosphere
Sphere of Earth’s rocks and plates.
Lithosphere
Envelope of gases surrounding Earth.
Atmosphere
Sphere of all water on Earth
Hydrosphere
The study of the ocean. Specifically the abiotic factors of the ocean.
Oceanography
The study of the weather and the atmosphere.
Meteorology
The study of the human impact on the environment.
Environmental Science
The study of the solid Earth.
Geology
The study of space and the objects in space.
Astronomy
Organize how things are alike.
Classify
Use one or more sense to gather information.
Observe
Making carful guesses.
Estimate
What might happen in the future, it’s based on past information.
Predict
Amount of mass in a given volume of a substance or object.
Density
Amount of matter in something.
Mass
Amount of space an object or substance takes up.
Volume
A substance where all the atoms are the same and can’t be broken down into smaller pieces and still have the original properties.
Elements
Matter made of two or more elements.
Compound
Is the smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still have the properties of that element.
Atom
