Unit 1 Flashcards
What is a constant
Something that does not change
What is a variable?
Something that is changed
What is an independent variable?
The one factor that is changed by the person during the experiment:manipulated
What is the dependent variable
The factor which is measured in the experiment; responding variable
What does a good experiment design include?
A control or control group, a replication, and reproductability
What is a control in an experiment
A baseline experiment that does not include the effect being studied
What is a control group in an experiment
For studies involving organisms, a control group is a group of organisms who are not treated. The may recieve a placebo or pretend treatment instead
What is a replication in experimental terms
The experiment is repeated multiple times to reduce statistical noise
What is reproductability in experimental terms
The experiment is repeated in such a way that other scientists can preform it themsrlves
What is precision in an experiment and what type of error does it have? What does that error include?
Precision is how close multiple measurements are to one another. Its error is random error and is caused by factors that vary from measurement to measurement
What is the formula for relative uncertainty (p)?
Aveerage deviation/mean value • 100 %
What is the definition of accuracy in an experiment and what types of error does it have?
Accuracy is how close the results are to the true or accepted value. It has systematic error:caused by a consistently present factor, and paralex error: an error made due to eyes or angle of observation
What is the formula for percent error (a) ?
l E-T/T l • 100 %
Define positive relationships on a graph
Increasing from left to right
Define negative relationships as pertaining to graphs
Decreasing from left to right
