Unit 1 Flashcards
Nucleus Function
Control centre of the cell
Nucleus
The core of the cell that is surrounded by a double membrane and contains DNA.
Ribosomes
Ribosomes are RNA and proteins. They are created in the nucleus.
Ribosomes function
Help manufacture other proteins.
Are ribosomes bound to a membrane?
No
Endoplasmic reticulum
Membrane system of folded sacs and interconnected channels. This organelle has a large surface are.
Rough Er
Endoplasmic reticulum containing ribosomes. Produces protein
Smooth ER
Endoplasmic reticulum without ribosomes. Makes carbohydrates
Golgi apparatus
A flatened stack of membranes.
Golgi apparatus function
Change, sort and package proteins into sacs called vesicles
Vacuoles
Membrane bound vesicles for temporary storage
Vacuoles function
Store food, enzymes, other materials and some times waste products.
Lysosomes
Vesicles that digest excess or worn out organelles, food and bacteria or viruses that have entered the cell.
More on Lysosomes
Lysosome have membranes that prevent the enzymes in them from destroy into them. Can fuse with vacuoles and dispose their enzymes into the vacuoles which digests the waste inside.
