Describe Union movements in the early 20th century
- American unions continued to have the most members
- struggled to gain legal status so that theh could act as spokespersons for their workers
- government had police protect strikebreakers or forcefully stopped strikes
What did Unions fight for in the early 20th century?
- for reduced working hours and protection for workers injured on the job
- demanded that the government legislate more often in favour of workers
Describe strikes
- negotiating power continued to be limited
- some unions resorted to strikes to make themselves heard
- governments did not see this in positive light
- government directly intervened in labour disputes and used force to repress strikes
Describe the Workmen’s compensation act
- 1909
- provided compensation to employees in the event of an accident of up to 50% of their wages
What happens to the number of priests and members of religious communities?
It grows drastically and testifies to the importance of the Catholic Church in this period
What is the cooperative movement?
An effective way for the Catholic Church to pursue its social action and refuce socio-economic inequalities
What did cooperative members do?
they pooled some of their assets and shared resources. Any profit generated by the cooperative was shared among the members.
How was the cooperative movement strong among farmers?
Farming cooperatives used bank loans to invest in the development of their farms

- anglophones attended school at a much higher rate than francophones
- french children stopped school around the age of 12 to work on farms and in factories
