When and why did Canada join the first world war?
- 1914, after germany declared war on Russia
- since it was part of the British empire
What were Europes national interests?
- seeked to increase their power and influence
- support for increased military budgets and larger armies
Describe the war measures act
- 1914
- allowed Canada to intervene in economic and social affairs as well as provincial jurisdictions
What could Canada do under the War Measures Act?
- impose censorship
- control prices and wages
- focus the economy and factories on war production
What did Canada do at the beginning of the war?
- reduced immigration
- revoked the right to vote
- set internment camps
- required those originally from enemy countries to register with the government
What are internment camps?
Camps set up by the Canadian government for those suspected of espionage or failing to register with the government
What is conscription?
Mandatory enlistment in the army
Describe the conscription crisis among English and French Canadians
- English Canadians felt attached to the British Empire and wanted to fight
- French Canadians felt this was an imperialist war
- francophones were put into the infantry and made to speak English
Describe the Military service act
- 1917
- federal government imposed conscription
What consequences did the Military service act have?
The act triggered a wave of opposition in Quebec and rekindled nationalist fervor among francophones

- factories worked at peak capacity to produce military equipment
- shipbuilding and farming also increased dramatically
- the first income tax was introduced to finance the war
Describe the war effort of men and women
- over 600 000 men formed Canada’s force
- 60 000 soldiers died in combat
- women worked in factories
Describe soldier’s re-establishment after the war in 1918
- demobilized soldiers were offered land and pensions
- many returned to factory jobs (many women lost their jobs)
- wounded, maimed, or psychologically damaged soldiers had difficulty returning to civilian life

- 1919
- ends the war officially
- determines Germany’s sactions (reparations)
