Unifying Processes Of Science Flashcards
What is an experimental group?
A group of subjects upon which the hypothesis is tested
What are the basic steps of the Scientific Method?
- State the problem
- Form a hypothesis
- Observe and Experiment
- Interpret the Data
- Draw Conclusions
What is a control group?
A group that is the same as the experimental, but the hypothesis is not tested
in clinical, sometimes given a placebo
What is a graduated cylinder good for?
- Graduated Cylinder - has readings on the sides to help determine changes as you add/decrease water
What is Bunsen Burner good for?
Burning items to change them from solids to liquids to gases and vice versa
What is a balance good for?
Measuring weight
- can be used at any level of gravity
What is a scale used for?
A scale has a spring loaded on with the pull of gravity tell its weight
** needs to calibrated to match the level of gravity **
How do you find the volume of an object?
Displacement
- Drop it in a graduated cylinder
- If you have 100mm of water
And - It goes up to 150mm
Volume = 50mm
What is a system?
Organized group of related objects or components that form a whole
Science typically assumes that the behavior of the universe is the same everywhere…
Therefore it is
Understandable & Predictable
What does order refer to?
Idea that there are certain commonalities and relationships that will allow to us to
- understand
- statistically quantify
&
Predict the behavior of - objects
- organisms
- events in the universe
How can you reduce uncertainty?
- Development of knowledge in related fields
- Understanding of related factors
- Better/More Observations
- Better Explanatory Models and Experimental Methods
What do systems of organization provide?
Useful ways of thinking about the world
