Temperature, Thermal Energy, & Heat Flashcards
Why do substances get larger as they get hotter?
The atoms bounce off one another and do not want to collide
What is temperature?
Temperature is the measure of the kinetic energy in a substance’s molecules
** atomic motion
- the hotter a substance, the fasters its atoms move -
What does the amount of thermal energy a substance has depend on?
The amount of thermal energy depends on the quantity of a substance
A bathtub at 90 degrees has more thermal energy than a cup of coffee at 120 degrees (more molecules/energy stored
What is conduction?
Conduction occurs when heat is transferred due to fast moving atoms and molecules colliding with slower ones in a neighboring region
Ex. Heat moving through a spoon in hot soup
**solid
What is convection?
Convection occurs when cooler portions of a liquid or gas flow in to take the place of hotter, rising, portions
Ex. Hot water moves in from the bottom of a boiling pot cause cool water to bring air(bubbles released), fill in and churn
Ex. Convection oven (gas) same idea
** liquids,gases
What is radiation?
Radiation occurs when heat is transmitted in the form of electromagnetic waves
